What is Melatonin? When we think of Melatonin, the first thing that comes to mind is its ability to induce sleep. It is no coincidence that it has been renamed "the sleep hormone". As it is essential for regulating the circadian rhythm and the sleep-wake cycle. In reality, Melatonin, which is present in all living organisms and in man is produced by the pineal gland, is of primary importance for the biological economy of the organism. Because it intervenes in numerous vital and biochemical reactions. The many studies that have followed over the years have in fact highlighted a long series of processes in which this molecule involved. In addition to the regulation of the sleep-wake rhythm. Melatonin intervenes: In the modulation of the activity of the immune system; In the control of body weight and in the regulation of the sensation of appetite; The regulation of the biorhythm linked to the succession of the seasons; In the control of tumor proliferation; In skin aging processes. And it is precisely on this latter capacity that today's article focuses. The activities of Melatonin on the skin Research conducted in the last twenty years has brought to light how Melatonin is also synthesised by the skin. Following this discovery, some biological functions in which this molecule intervenes at the cutaneous level also highlighted. In fact, Melatonin has an excellent ability to bind to lipids and to penetrate deeply, helping cells in important activities such as the repair of mitochondria and DNA damage. Not only that: the administration of Melatonin increases the cellular production of antioxidant enzymes. Which help clean the cells and blood flow from excess free radicals. One aspect on which Melatonin can intervene is cellular ageing caused by damage induced by ultraviolet radiation. In this sense, numerous studies, including of a clinical nature, have demonstrated the effectiveness of Melatonin in preventing damage from UV rays, if administered before prolonged exposure to the sun. In fact, Melatonin is able to reduce the erythema associated with exposure to UV rays. Thanks to the control over some enzymes, involved in the degradation of collagen and in the formation of furrows and skin marks, limiting damage to cellular structures. Different studies have shown how a keratinocyte subjected to ultraviolet radiation can express Melatonin more intensely. And how its metabolites have the ability to protect DNA from damage induced by ultraviolet radiation and control the development of any inflammatory processes. Therefore Melatonin has a fundamental role in counteracting skin aging. In addition to the inevitable and unsightly appearance of wrinkles. But also in preventing the onset of skin tumors. Melatonin, our beauty advice But how can Melatonin "administered"? Although it has long been trying to find the benefits of Melatonin by taking it by mouth (supplements). To date the only evidence of its effectiveness for anti-stress and anti-aging purposes concerns its use at the topical level. The topical application of Melatonin, therefore, can represent a more than valid anti-aging strategy. The new and exclusive "Melatosphere" technology, studied by Magistral Cosmetics. Which allows this molecule to conveyed. It allows melatonin to incorporated and transported by skin-like oils (Rosa Mosqueta Oil, Avocado Oil and Opuntia Oil). With the result to give hydration and nourishment to dehydrated skin with moderate and severe signs of aging.
