Micro-Coils

In the medical field, micro-coils are useful to detect physical conditions such as temperature, blood flow, blood pressure, velocity, etc., and find out the disruption of the body function. On the other hand, micro-coils have also effective applications in electronics. Micro-coils are crucial components of various devices and act as receivers and transmitters. This article will focus on explaining the technology that involves in the manufacturing process of the micro-coils and the application areas of the micro coils.

Technology and Method:

1. Ultra-fine Wires Connection:

Compared to human hair, the diameter of the ultra-fine wire is 5 to 10 times smaller, and it is usually about 9 microns. Connecting two ultra-fine wires is crucial for the micro-coil manufacturing process. However, due to the tiny diameter of the ultra-fine wires, traditional welding and soldering methods are not useful to connect the wires.

There are some physical and environmental challenges that traditional methods can not overcome. Traditional methods are not also effective to meet the ultra-strict tolerance requirements. For these reasons, modern manufacturers use the innovative Thermo-Compression Bonding Technology.

2. Thermo Compression Bonding:

Thermo compression bonding method is an excellent method to overcome all the physical and environmental constraints and provide corrosion-resistant, stain-resistant, and highly durable and reliable joints for ultra-fine wires. As the manufacturers can easily integrate this method into the mass production process, therefore, the economic cost of this method is low compared to the traditional methods. This process is suitable to prepare permanent implants and other long-life products.

3. Thermal compression bonding technology is effective to connect –

  • Ultra-fine wires to the tiny copper thermo-couples.
  • Two metals where the connection between a printed circuit board and micro-coils occurs through the intermediate wires.
  • A support system with the micro-coil using metal-plated terminals.

Advantages of Thermal Compression Bonding:

The thermal compression bonding method can reduce the noise levels and reliefs the strain at the connections. This method is also useful to protect sensitive components from any damage. Due to the oxidization-free connection, this method is also highly durable and reliable. This method eliminates human errors and minimizes production costs.

Winding of the Micro-Coils:

The winding method involves the winding of an ultra-fine conductive wire around a pin or core. Manufacturers need custom machinery to conduct this method effectively.

Applications:

Some important applications of micro-coils are-

  1. In the production of the active implants including controlling and monitoring of the pace-makers, pain management devices, and other deep brain stimulation components.
  2. Therapeutic applications- to prepare the devices for electricity-based ablations, and electro physiology treatments.
  3. In order to prepare the orientation and navigation sensors for targeted radiation catheters, targeted drug delivery, highly accurate ablations, stent positioning, endoscopic manipulation, and implanted markers.
  4. Dental and orthopedic treatments where pulsed electromagnets are required.
  5. In some diagnostic applications that involve sensor implants such as determination of the blood flow, blood pressure, etc.
