Adaptor

There are cases when you end up with two types of pipes that are not the same. Adaptors help you connect these two types of pipes together. A typical adaptor has a male end on one side and a female on the other. In case there are no rings or threads to bind these pipes together, glue, welding, or soldering can be used to connect two pipes using this fitting instead.

Barb

When you are looking for a tool that can help you connect a pipe to a hose, you go with a barb fitting. These have male connections at one end and the other side has a barbed tube.

Keep in mind that you should only use plastic barb fittings if you are trying to supply cold water and brass fittings if you are carrying hot water to hoses.

Coupling

When you have two pipes that have the same diameter, you should use a coupling to connect both of them together. Generally, both pipes need to be of the same type. In case you have a broken pipe or a leak in your plumbing system, a coupling fitting can come in handy.

There are two types of coupling in general, compression and slip. When you have a leak in a pipe, use compression coupling fitting to seal the pipe with rubber seals. When you have a damaged pipe, you can use slip coupling which can vary in length depending on the amount of pipe that is damaged.

Cross

When you want to connect four pipes in one connection, use a cross fitting. It comes with four ends that can be used to three inlets and one outlet or three outlets and one inlet.

Generally, these types of fitting can carry more stress since they have four connections at the same time, which is why they are built tougher than any other type of fitting on the list.

Elbow

Just like the name suggests, it almost looks like an elbow joint, since it has a bend that can connect two pipes at several degree angles. These types of fittings are generally used when you need to change the direction of water flow in the plumbing system. These can be found in different types of material, from plastic to copper.

Tee

Similar to the previous one, this one gets its name from the shape it comes in, which is like the letter ‘T’. These fittings have an inlet and an outlet and can be found in different types of sizes in the market.

Unlike other types, these fittings need to be installed using the instructions that come with them. Every fitting will come with directions, and the plumbing system will only work if these are installed properly.

Valve

This one is pretty common and known to many people. Valves help control the flow of water to pipes and come with a lever. A lot of plastic pipes manufacturers build these fittings, but they are also manufactured with other materials as well.
