Environmental Sustainability

Most people believe they live a life of comfort as they generally own everything they need. However, the bitter truth is that this comfort level is most likely to dwindle not only for them but for everyone in the world today. The future might not have enough natural resources and raw materials needed to make these comfortable things soon. Therefore, in order to ensure the future generation enjoys these comforts of life as well, the concept of sustainability needs to be focused on. Scientists and environmentalists across the world are working on it to make the planet better for the next generation.

Understanding environmental sustainability in simple terms

Environmental sustainability is a complex and vast term. You will find many definitions on it as well; however, the following illustration will help you to understand what it clearly means in simple terms. Imagine you own a piggy bank, and it is always filled with money. Even if you take out money, you are able to refill it as you have a monthly allowance or cash flow. If you keep spending the money with limited cash flow, your money will run out sooner or later. This means you will not be able to buy items or enjoy services you generally use daily. It might take some time for the money to completely run out; however, one day, you will have none left. Likewise, in the environment, natural resources are gradually decreasing, and over time, if appropriate steps are not taken, the future generations that are yet to come with have nothing left for them to use.

Keeping the needs of the future generation in mind

Sustainability is the process of ensuring these natural resources last for a long time and forever. The core task of sustainability has been undertaken by businesses, scientists, politicians, and other people around the globe. They are extensively researching and engaged in projects that center around environmental sustainability. At the same time, the projects they manage have the goal of not disrupting people’s lives. The United Nations has referred to sustainability as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future generation’s ability to cater to their own needs. In short, the above means that humans should not use everything up now that individuals in the future will need.

Environmental sustainability will improve every area of life- transport, education, technology, government, and more. This means if the process is done correctly, people living 50 or even 100 years from now in the future are able to enjoy them too. The motto here is to reside happily without using up all the resources you enjoy today. If people work in important industries where items needed today are made, they are able to create better sustainable products for the future from natural resources. At the same time, humans need to discover materials that are new and can be simply replaced. In this way, resources can be protected and saved. They will not run and can be used by the future generations of tomorrow with success!
