Despite the enormous “freedom to travel” that we enjoy as British citizens, there are countries for which we still have to apply for a visa. You can now read how you can get the visa as quickly as possible and how much it costs.
The passport ranking, which I already reported to you in my travel magazine, has shown it: The British passport gives us great advantages when it comes to easy entry into other countries. So we can enter many countries with our passport without having to apply for a visa. This makes us the world champions of visa-free travel by a large margin. But what about the countries in which we as British citizens have to apply for a visa? Which countries are these and how should you best apply for the visa? Today I will show you which countries you have to apply for a visa for when entering the country, which information you need for this and how you can apply for the visa.
Apply for a visa for the USA:
The USA is one of the countries where we (actually) need a visa. Thanks to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), we as British citizens no longer have to submit a visa application to the consulate and no longer have to go to the consulate in person, but can alternatively register in the ESTA travel authorization system from the comfort of home. This registration is quick and you can even do it up to 72 hours before the scheduled departure. The costs are around $ 13 and are billed via a credit card or PayPal. This travel authorization is then valid for 2 years, but not yet an electronic entry authorization.
You will only receive the actual entry permit from the customs and immigration officials on site after you land in the USA. A return ticket is also required when entering the country. You can find all information about ESTA and detailed instructions in my lexicon.
If you want to apply for a classic visa for the USA, you have to contact the US embassies in Embassy. To get the visa, you have to register online on the Federal website, select and apply for the appropriate visa type, and then make an appointment for a personal interview at a US embassy. The personal interview is mandatory. A visa for the USA costs you 155-200 $ depending on the type, the length of the tolerated stay is determined by the officials upon entry.
In rare cases, there may be difficulties and refusals when entering the USA. This is shown, for example, in the case of Aimee, who was refused entry to the USA. In the article you will also learn which factors can lead to entry to the USA being denied.
Apply for a visa to India:
If you travel to India by plane, you can apply for the tourist visa for India electronically since 2014. This will then be issued to you as a “Tourist Visa on Arrival” when you enter the country. To apply for the visa, all you have to do is fill out the ETA application online, pay $ 49.95 by credit card and wait for approval. In most cases this takes place no later than 72 hours after the application has been submitted.
The Foreign Office advises that the e-TV, as the visa for India is also called, should be applied for at least 4 days before entry. The requirements to get the Visa on Arrival issued include that your passport is still valid for at least 6 months and that you already have a return ticket. With the visa you can stay in India for 30 days, unfortunately the Visa on Arrival cannot be extended.
If you want to enter India by land or sea, or if you want to stay in the country for more than 30 days, you need a regular tourist visa. This must be applied for online two months before the trip at the earliest and the signed application sent by post to a responsible visa service provider. The cost of a tourist visa for India is around $ 98.
