Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom: Another addition to the Sportster line-up

In 2016, Harley-Davidson launched its sportster motorcycle – the 1200 Custom. The bike comes from the Sportster line-up which also has the Iron 883, Forty-Eight and the SuperLow that was discontinued and made place for a new bike. The 1200 Custom is ushered in via the CKD route and is assembled at the American bike maker’s local plant in Haryana.

Packed neatly within the frame is a 1202cc, twin-cylinder engine that produces 67.70bhp and 96Nm of torque. The motor is air-cooled and comes paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom is BSVI-compliant.

The 1200 Custom is an elegant and understated motorcycle, and doesn’t appear too intimidating at first. It manages to get a lot of stares from people around. The 1200 Custom is longer than the Forty-Eight. Its touring-friendly fuel tank looks cool and there’s a lot of chrome all over the bike. Even the five-spoke cast-aluminium wheels get a chrome finish. You’ll also notice the pulled-back handlebar and the chrome lip on top of the circular headlight. The pea-shooter exhausts too get a chrome finish while the rear fender is massive. We also liked the indicators hanging from the handlebar. The instrument cluster consists of a single-dial analogue speedometer along with a small digital display that features the trip meter, tachometer and odometer. Right above the speedometer lies the fuel warning light, neutral light and indicator lights. In terms of dimensions, the 1200 Custom is 2225mm in length, 820mm in width and 1120mm in height. Fire up the engine, and it thunders to life. It’s the same V-twin Evolution you see on the Forty-Eight. At idle, a lot of vibrations can be felt. And the typical rumble from the twin exhausts sounds great. The gearshift is light but quite notchy. The torque is apparent when you get going, and there’s sufficient performance on tap. Throttle response isn’t particularly smooth and the clutch is heavy. At 268kgs, the bike’s weight is quite manageable. The ground clearance, on the other hand, is 105mm, while the bike has a wheelbase of 1530mm and a seat height of 725mm.

The Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom has a fuel tank capacity of 17 litres. In terms of mileage, the bike is capable of returning 18kmpl by ARAI, in BSVI guise.

Mechanical Parts

The seat is nice and long, and the overall seating posture is very relaxed. The foot pegs are set in the front and the handlebar sports a swept-back design. You sit in an upright position. The bike feels more at home on the highways.Despite its heavy front-end, the bike is surprisingly easy to manoeuvre and the bike is very flickable around corners. The stiff suspension, however, tends to unsettle the rider quite a bit. The amount of grip from the tyres isn’t sufficient and doesn’t inspire confidence. And the brakes are strong. At the front, the bike rides on telescopic forks, while the rear gets pre-load dual adjustable suspension. As far as the chassis is concerned, it is built around a tubular frame. The 1200 Custom runs on 130/90 B16 tyres at the front and 150/80 B16 tyres at the rear. Retardation duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front and at the rear.

The bike comes loaded with a slew of features like an LED headlight and tail light, analogue and digital instrument cluster, engine kill switch, digital trip meter and a pass light switch.

The Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom is available in a variety of shades like Black Tempest, Twisted Cherry, Industrial Gray Denim / Black Denim, Sumatra Brown, Bonneville Salt Pearl Deluxe and Silver Fortune / Black Tempest. Black Tempest is certainly a colour that is bound to be a favourite among young riders.
