Any space can come alive with a few potted plants. They do more than just perking up the space- potted plants can refresh the air around you and when nurtured properly can yield a harvest of fruits and flowers.
The challenge for the modern urban gardener is to grow plants that flourish in containers rather than the ground. You can start to buy plastic flower pots online. The following are some other steps to start gardening in your home:
IDENTIFY THE SPACE
You will start well by scoping out the space you can afford for growing plants. Select spots with good light which will encourage growth of plants. All plants need light to do photosynthesis and survive.
Select plants on basis of light available. When planted indoors, many light loving plants like jasmines and roses will not live. At the same time, shade loving plants will wither when placed in sunny spots. In case your garden is indoors, choose plants like syngonium, pothos, box palms etc which will thrive in low-light conditions.
Ideas for plant containers can be as versatile as old buckets, bottles, grow bags and clay pots. A great idea will be to choose a container which is at least as tall as 25% tall as your plant is likely to be. This will ensure that plant’s roots have will have sufficient space to grow. You can source containers by trying to buy plastic plant pots online.
TAKE CARE OF DRAINAGE
You must ensure that the container has a hole at the bottom for permitting draining out of excess water. This will prevent water from stagnating around the roots of your plants and making them rot. The drainage hole must be obstruction free for permitting excess water to drain out, especially when you over-water. You can use a handful of pebbles or place broken tile pieces around the drain hole to avoid clogging of soil.
ADD POTTING MEDIUM
This is a tricky aspect. Your potting medium or soil must have a judicious mix of water, air, minerals and organic matter. Organic matter can be arranged by using compost generated from your home waste while coco-peat and sand can serve as excellent soil aerators. The ideal combination of potting medium is red earth, sand and compost in the ratio 2:1:1. For cacti and other succulents, the quantum of sand can be increased.
FILL THE POT
You can aerate your planting medium by raking it or even tossing it into the air till it turns crumbly and light. The container must be filled up to the brim, leaving around 3 cm from the top for watering.
DO ACTUAL PLANTING
Next, you must plant your sapling firmly in the centre of the pot. Press the potting medium in a firm manner, around the base of the plant. Water the pot lightly till water drains out at the bottom.
WATER THE PLANT
You must water the plant only when you observe top layer of soil of the pot as dry. Poke the drain hole with a pencil or stick to ascertain any stagnating water. At the same time, do not over water, especially succulents like cacti. The latter must be watered only a few times per month.
Every 3 months or so, add some vermicompost or home waste compost to the pot.
These are the basic steps to grow a home garden, especially in containers in indoors spaces.
