Most of us don’t pay much attention to our kidneys until something goes wrong, but behind the scenes, these bean-shaped organs which sit under our rib cage play a critical role in keeping our bodies healthy. They flush toxins out, filter blood, and produce three hormones: one to keep blood pressure in check, you to stimulate red blood cells, and one to keep strong bones. Luckily, we can support these renal workhorses by creating an excellent lifestyle and diet options.
The kidneys detoxify the body by massaging the blood and secreting the wastes through the urine. Steven Lamm, MD, an internist and a faculty member at New York University School of Medicine, recommends drinking enough water” so the urine is relatively clear, a good indication that you’re hydrating a sufficient volume.” Do not overdo your liquid intake–a lot of water actually forces the kidneys to work overtime to filter out the surplus.
Eat kidney-friendly meals .
The kidneys excrete wastes but they can not always eliminate all toxins. Too much protein can increase the load on the kidneys, so opt for a low-protein diet plan and head that your blood sugar and insulin levels. Also, states Dr. Lamm, “anything that causes elevated blood pressure–such as a high sodium diet isn’t good for your kidneys.”
Supplement with herbs.
Diuretic herbs like stinging nettle and uva ursi have anti-inflammatory properties that aid in flushing out the kidneys and urinary tract. Parsley is a natural diuretic that is particularly effective when taken as a tea. Only bring to a boil two tablespoons of chopped parsley in two cups of water and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain the skillet and drink the tea.
Obey your natural urges.
As straightforward as it seems, reacting to your body’s natural urges is an underestimated but key element of good health. Honoring your body’s want to sleep, hydrate, urinate, yawn, or sneeze connects you to your own physical needs. Holly Lucille, ND, RN (aka Dr. Holly), an expert in the field of natural medicine and writer of Creating and Maintaining Balance: A Woman’s Guide to Safe, Natural Hormone Health, agrees. “Listen to your body,” she says, “it is a great communicator. Reduce your use of pain relievers.
Utilizing NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like Advil or Motrin or acetaminophens such as Tylenol or Excedrin on a regular basis, can damage your kidneys. Ideally, it is best to steer clear of these drugs, ” says Dr. Holly. She advocates turmeric instead, which she calls”one of the most effective all-natural pain relievers.” Anyone who takes pain medicine, says Dr. Holly, “should think about supplementing with milk thistle, which is a liver-protecting tonic.”

As soon as we twist wring the kidneys out, getting rid of all of the rancid, poisonous blood; as we discharge the pose, a fresh source of oxygenated blood flooding the area. Kapalabhati breathing, using its driven exhales and passive inhales, stimulates the kidneys via the pulsating movement of the navel. Keep your feet warm. From there, the chi (life force) climbs up from the earth and moves up the interior of the leg and into the lower abdomen. Massage hot sesame oil to the young Quan pressure stage (the indentation just under the big toe) on the soles of your feet and cover them with your favorite fuzzy slippers!
