According to the American Cancer Society, people with fair skin are much more likely to suffer from it. It also affirms that although melanoma cancer is not the most common, it is the most deadly and is growing; the frequency of this cancer is 20 times higher in fair skin. That is why prevention is vital.

How to take care of my skin in summer and prevent cancer?

1. Avoid overexposure to the sun

Excessive exposure to the sun is one of the strongest factors for suffering from this cancer. Ultraviolet rays cause burns and wounds on the skin that in the long term will lead to tumors.

This radiation is much stronger between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon, so it is advisable to avoid exposing yourself between those hours and always try to walk under the shade of a tree or building.

2. Use sunscreen

Every time you go out, even if the sky is cloudy, put on sunscreen, as the clouds will not prevent ultraviolet rays from reaching your skin. The sunscreen you use must have a minimum SPF of 50 , since Peru is among one of the destinations with the highest solar radiation and only this “factor” will be in charge of protecting you adequately.

Make sure to apply it half an hour before going out in the sun and reapply every 2 hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Remember to spread it on all areas of your skin exposed to the sun, such as the face, shoulders, arms, legs, back, even nose and ears.

3. Wear the right clothes and accessories

At this point we advise you to wear dark colored clothes, since they tend to protect more from the sun than light ones. Even tight garments are more advisable than loose ones. In case you have a history of this disease, it would be much better to wear long or three-quarter sleeves.

Also, do not forget to cover your head with a hat , cap, scarf or umbrella to prevent UV rays from falling directly on your skin. Finally, wear sunglasses with a UV protection factor to protect your eyes, the bigger they are, the better.

4. Eat foods that protect the skin

There are a variety of foods that help protect your skin care tips, making it healthier and more resistant to disease.

For example, foods rich in vitamin A, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, etc., have the power to keep your skin healthy thanks to their antioxidants and their ability to synthesize collagen that help nourish the skin.

The same happens with those that have a high content of Omega 3, since its anti-inflammatory properties limit skin irritations.

5. Hydrate your skin

It is very important to hydrate your skin continuously , when you do it, it cleans the impurities that are absorbed from the outside, keeping it nourished and moisturized. All these conditions improve the proper functioning of your skin, which is to protect you against external factors that can cause damage.

Use moisturizing creams rich in antioxidants , and substances such as collagen, etc. as they will help you maintain firm and healthy skin. Also, remember to wash it continuously and go to a specialist in case your skin needs a deep cleaning or exfoliation to clean your pores.

6. Observe the changes in your skin and go to the dermatologist

Perform a self-examination from head to toe once a month, inspect every part of your body, do not forget the back, neck, hands and private parts; all this in order to detect any redness or stain without any cause, such as a mole that appeared out of nowhere , with a non-uniform color, size and shape. These are the most common signs of melanoma skin cancer, so watch out.

It is necessary to go to a dermatologist at least once a year , but if you notice any of these spots or have a high risk factor, these appointments should be immediate or more frequent.

7. Avoid tanning products and devices

Tanning your skin is a risk factor that can cause cancer in the long term, burning your skin with the sun’s rays is not healthy at all, especially now, where radiation is much stronger.

Many people try to acquire that tan color, with other methods; however, few know that they are equal to or more harmful than the sun’s rays.

Tanning beds, for example, emit UV rays 12 times stronger than the sun itself . The only thing that tanning lotions do is accelerate the burning process and tanning sprays are harmful to health, and not because of the contact they make with your skin care tips, but because of the chemical content that they emit and are absorbed by our lungs.

Now that you know how to take care of your skin in summer, you should start applying the tips now. Only in this way will the risk of skin cancer be lower. Do not forget that in case you have an anomaly, you should go to a specialist and thus prevent or detect any harmful injury in time.
